# Calculate BMI

The Body Mass Index or BMI is a measure of your body weight in relation to your height. If you are overweight or obese, you will have a BMI of more than 25. The higher the number the more overweight you are considered. Another thing to consider is that the BMI women measurement does not go by how you look. One can have a high BMI due to muscle mass, body builders usually have a higher BMI but are not considered overweight. A "normal" BMI is between ranges from 18.5-24.99. If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are considered to be underweight.

To calculate BMI, you simply need to know two numbers. You need to know how tall you are in inches and how much you weigh in pounds. There is also a metric conversion where you plug in meters and kilograms instead of pounds and inches. In either case, you will get a number that tells you if you are normal, underweight or overweight.

The formula is as follows Weight(Inches x Inches) x 703

In the case of using pounds and inches, you would find out how much you weigh in pounds and then divide that by your height in inches squared. You will get a fractional number that is well below 1.0 and then, when you multiple that number by 703, you will get the Body Mass Index.

A simple example of a calculation for a 5 foot(60 inch)female who weighs 100 pounds would yield a BMI figure of

100(60x60)x 703

100(3600) x 703

.0278 x 703

19.54 BMI

In this example the female would be considered to be well within the normal range (18.5-24.99) for her height and weight.

If trying to calculate BMI on your own by using the basic formula seems too confusing or you do not have a calculator to do the multiplication and division, you can always make use of one of the many online BMI calculators. To use a BMI calculator, simply plug in your weight and height and press calculate.

The online calculator is helpful because you can plug in different weights and see how your BMI changes. If you are overweight, you can calculate how many pounds you will need to lose to fall into the normal range.
